Ad Reinhardt, from ‘How to Look at Art, Arts & Architecture’ (1946)
A mural was painted over Monday afternoon after Trenton police expressed concern that the painting, depicting Michael Brown, a Ferguson, Mo., teen who was fatally shot by police in August, sent the wrong message about community and police relations.
This man has a name. His name is Frank Embree.
He was falsely accused of raping a 14-year-old white girl.
Embree maintained his innocence but confessed after receiving over 100 lashes.
With tears pouring down his face, he agreed to own up to the charges if the police agreed not to torture him any further.
He was castrated, skinned (front and back), lynched and burned alive in front of a cheering crowd on July 23, 1889.
If you are American this is your history, don’t ignore it. Make sure that you make up for it by changing America today.

Wanna see my cry like a baby? Ask me who these women were.
Hughes’ father was beaten nearly to death by the KKK when she was a kid, and what does she do? Become an activist to try and stop that from happening to other people. She raised money to bail civil rights protesters out of jail. She helped women get out of abusive situations by providing shelter for them until they got on their feet. She founded an agency that helped women get to work without having to leave their children alone, because childcare in the 1970s? Not really a thing. In fact, a famous feminist line in the 70s was “every housewife is one man away from welfare.”
Then she teamed up with Steinman to found the Women’s Action Alliance, which created the first battered women’s shelters in history. They attacked women’s rights issues through boots on the ground activism, problem solving, and communication. They stomped over barriers of race and class to meet women where they were: mostly mothers who wanted better for themselves and their children.
These are women are who I always wanted to be.
Finally, Nigeria’s Kidnapped Schoolgirls Are Coming Home
The agreement, announced by the country’s defense minister, also involves a cease fire between Boko Haram and Nigeria’s military. The government expects the terror group will not back out on the deal. “Commitment among parts of Boko Haram and the military does appear to be genuine,” an official with Nigeria’s security forces told Reuters Friday. “It is worth taking seriously.”
Boko Haram militants abducted more than 300 schoolgirls from Chibok boarding school in northern Nigeria in mid-April, sparking a worldwide outcry and propelling the group onto to the international stage for the first time. Over fifty of the girls escaped early on. The rest have remained in captivity ever since.”

AWESOME NEWS - this has been such a nightmare to follow, it is so great to hear the girls are being released!
